Panic attacks can be crippling and make you feel detached from reality. Here are a few tips to utilize when you feel a panic attack coming on.

  1. Remove yourself from the environment. If it's possible, remove yourself from the environment. There are triggers that our subconscious is not aware of. Removing yourself from the environment breaks the cycle of all the overwhelming feelings. Simply just walking releases endorphins. Endorphins improve mood, release stress, and enhance your sense of well-being. I would get really bad panic attacks during lectures in school, so bad to the point that I felt smothered. I stepped out of lecture and went to the bathroom to run cold water through my hands.

  2. Run cold water through your hands. Sensory stimulation can help in breaking those anxious feelings that may lead to a panic attack.

  3. Breathe slowly and deeply. This helps you to stay grounded and gives you something else to focus on.

  4. Picture your happy place. It will be somewhere you feel safe, calm and relaxed.

  5. Learn your triggers. Panic attacks can often be triggered by the same things, such as crowds, enclosed spaces, or even traumas. You may be able to reduce the intensity and recurrence of panic attacks, by learning to manage or deflect your triggers.

  6. Look at 5 separate objects around you. This is a type of grounding technique. Say to yourself the color of them, their shape, etc. By doing this, you're directing your focus away from your anxiety. You trick your mind to focus on something else. THIS REALLY WORKS GUYS!
